The cost of bad meetings - oh, the humanity!

"'bad meetings exact a toll on the human beings who must endure them, and this goes far beyond mere momentary dissatisfaction. Bad meetings...generate real human suffering in the form of anger, lethargy, and cynicism. And while this certainly has a profound impact on organisational life, it also impacts people's self-esteem, their families, and their outlook on life..."

How true Michael. I find that meetings for the purpose of information dissemination are a total drain (why not just send an email?) But conversely - meetings to discuss implementation or to sort out issues can be invigorating.

Solution: in bad meetings, find something absolutely absorbing on your iPhone, and stare at it intently. If anyone questions this behaviour, claim to be taking notes.

Keep on expanding that leadership capacity...

Lencioni's stuff is almost always better than anything so-called Christian leadership folks have to offer! If only every pastor had to read Death by Meeting...

Making a highjack of the blog for a bit, feel free to delete for the sake of uniformity of comments, but just wanted to drop a line and say I appreciated what you said at afreshlookatmission, and found it stimulating and thought provoking.
Thanks heaps
Steve

Jess believes this passionately and exerts much of her energy on attempting to address it. Bad meetings kill: time, motivation, unity and spiritual health.
