Andrew Cameron on Homophobia

beyond homophobia

I have been waiting a long time for someone to say this, and to say it so well.

Thanks for the link, Michael.

I thought a lot of that was rather well spoken: "we all live together in a culture that is very shallow when it comes to talking and thinking about our desires and their expression. We could dig deeper." Indeed!

At the risk of being very hard to please, I thought the following statement rather unhelpfully formulated (maybe because it is too compressed):

"We also need to address the corrupted views of singleness which assume sexual expression to be central to a good human existence."

Hmmm. Sexual expression is an extremely important good, with entailments moreover for identity and social life: I thought we were all pretty much agreed on that one. Isn't the problem rather a vulgarisation of that truth --- or perhaps a false semblance of it --- and an overhasty rush to ethics? And is the problem really well-described as a corrupted view of singleness? Isn't it a more general problem, in whose light "single" becomes either a confused or a trivial category?

That said, I'd like to make an explicit positive point: I appreciated the call to detente, and the reflection (and call to repentance) on the church's tone.
