The difference is:

if you put something up for publication, you oughta respect the copyright of the publishers! And their good graces in indulging you by printing your stuff!

Michael,
Thanks for your article, In Defence Of Doctrine.
I put the following remarks in some comments about June's Briefing:
"I didn’t really discern a defence for the formulation and proclamation of doctrine that flowed from the fact that the Bible itself teaches us that we must systematically understand and teach its content. Doctrine is more that just useful. It is obedience. The life of Jesus was morally and ethically perfect, but his rebuttal of the error that confronted him was not to point to his perfection, it was to point to the Scriptures in a systematic way. So too for Paul and the apostolic cohort.
So, I agree with all Michael said, but wish I’d been able to find a significant other thing that I think needed to be said."
I feel I missed something. Could you help me out?
With appreciation,
Gary Ware.

Thanks Gary. Not quite sure that I didn't do what you say I didn't. Thought I did. Could you be more specific?

I understand your bemusement.
I guess I was looking for the sort of foundation that I think is evident when the Sadducees engage Jesus in Matthew 22 and he responds that they know neither the Scriptures or the power of God. They are asking the wrong question because if they understood the reality of the (doctrine of) resurrection, they would know that their question had no basis for being asked.
The devotion of the early church (already having responded to the Gospel) to the apostle's teaching, seems to show a body of doctrine being passed on.
Paul's instruction to Titus (and the elders) to teach what accords with sound doctrine seems to assume a basic body of learning that undergirds a breadth of instruction. Sound doctrine in this case does not seem to be confined to the Gospel, but I would say that the Gospel is the enabling and motivating principle of it.
Again, I agree with all of your article. I just wonder if the McLarens et.al. couldn't in some way affirm all of your reasons for commitment to their formulation of doctrine.
(That's unfair because Generous Orthodoxy affirms everyone on McLaren's estimation of what he believes everyone's distinctives should really mean.)
Am I barking up the wrong tree here?
Thanks for engaging.
