An Existential Question

Can I really write a thesis on martyrdom and authentic selfhood and not mention either Heidegger or Kierkegaard?

Well, both Heidegger and Kierkegaard weren't too fussed about discussing other philosophers... and Heidegger barely mentioned Kierkegaard.

And Kierkegaard totally ignored Heidegger. Not a single mention. I bet he didn't even read Sein und Zeit.

I would leave Heidegger and run with Kierkegaard. However, that's only because I don't get Heidegger (who was german anyway), where as I reckon Kierkegaard is a total dude (and danish!).

Probably.

I would think that you should make some mention of at least one of them considering their combined influence on the likes of Barth, Bonhoeffer, Bultmann, Ricoeur, Derrida and Foucault.

I wouldn't quite say that, Drew (although admittedly I'm sure you're much better read in Kierkegaard than me). SAK took many a pot shot at the Hegelian "omnibus".

Btw Michael, one of my favourite Kierkegaard quotes is about martyrdom:

"The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins."
