Ah, yes, that works for the footnotes, but in the bibliography it cites him as
Paul II, John
and for Benedict XVI you get
XVI, Benedict.
Presumably exactly the same as you'd do for Augustine of Hippo

Now there's a phrase we don't use nearly enough.
Well if you want to footnote a pope, according to the Oxford Reference Dictionary for Papistry (3rd Ed), the correct way is thus:
Pope John Paul II, Ap. Letter Vicesimus quintus annus, 4 December 1988, n. 3: AAS 81 (1989) p. 899. (for example)
Now if you want to Quote a Pope, that's a different matter....
